Harry is a white dog with black spots ... for a while anyway. The difference between clean and dirty becomes rather apparent as we followed Harry through his adventures in the book Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham.

Our project for our dog-themed lesson was making dog-biscuit prints! Surprised faces were followed by giggles as the kids began to dip the doggy treats in paint and create dog bone abstract compositions.

The resulting colorful masterpieces!

There Are Cats in This Book

...and they like boxes, pillows, yarn, fish and turning pages! Three cats - Moonpie, Tiny and André -in this colorful, interactive book by Viviane Schwarz introduced us to fun new words and opposites.

The children were very excited that they were asked by the cats to "turn the page!" and "open the boxes" and "blow on the page" to help the cats dry off after a fishy tidal wave (the cats were very thankful, and fluffy!) Then, we had fun opening and closing a box, rattling it to see if it was loud or quiet, and putting different colored balls in and out of the box - careful listening was required! Our project this week used yarn - the cats' favorite thing! The children practiced cutting and gluing colorful yarn onto Moonpie, Tiny and André.

The results were fun!

After our project we sang Tall & Small, and played with our parachute making the colorful balls fly up and down. Our stamp dialogue for today was about - what else? A cat! A blue cat like Moonpie! (and we all had to blow on our stamps to help dry them.)

Winter 2009

In this round of The Children's English Hour 2009 we are focusing on opposites. It is snowy and cold in Hannover this week, so we began with hot and cold, and Ezra Jack Keats wintery The Snowy Day. After warming up with our Friendship Song, Open, Shut Them, and The Energy Song, we did a little experiment. Each of the children was given an ice cube to hold and as the drips began to drop we learned the words ice, cold, ice cube, and melting. We then moved to the radiator which was hot and put our ice cubes on top to see how long it took for them to melt! Our creative project was foamy fun: who can make a snowman out of shaving cream? Each child was given a tray, a squirt of shaving cream, and some utensils. Several lovely snowmen were indeed built, but some kids found it more fun to put a dollop on their nose, or even mimic daddy shaving! We completed the lesson with Magic Bubbles, a parachute game with colorful mittens, Tall & Small, and the goodbye song.

Wintertime Themes

December was a busy time at the Children's Art Workshop! Here is a brief, colorful summary of our English lessons and projects:

Fun with opposites and origami penguins - this lesson was inspired by Oliver Jeffers' wonderful adventure tale Lost and Found.

Every year we make our own wrapping paper. A collection of themed rollers encourage kids to learn wintertime words: reindeer, sleigh, snowflake, tree, snowman, angel, present...

"It's a dark, dark, cold cold night. Mama stirs the fire. Baby Rustles in his sleep." Olivier Dunrea's "It's Snowing" is one of the loveliest children's books I know.

This two-step project involved creating wintertime scenes with oil pastel on black paper and then spraying the drawings with white paint ... it's snowing!

These faux stained glass leaves look great on a Christmas tree or in a window. It was a longer project, and the kids were great about asking for things in English: may I have some green paper please? May I have white ribbon please?

Augustus and his Smile

This week in the Children's English Hour we spent time exploring feelings: happy, sad, and angry. We practiced the song "If You're Happy and You Know It!" with super silly motions - not just clapping your hands! When we sang about being sad we had to pat our heads, and if we were angry we stomped our feet. The kids made up other motions we could do if we were feeling a certain way, so we came up with some great (and sometimes silly) vocabulary! Our story time book for this week was Augustus and His Smile by Catherine Rayner, a lovely book about a rambunctious, curious tiger who searched far and wide for his own missing smile. Because feelings are strongly associated with emotions, the kids were able to paint their own colorful portraits of Augustus the tiger with watercolors!

Olivia!

This week we focused on dressing up. What better way than with Olivia! The children found the book very funny, and easy to understand with Ian Falconer's incredible illustrations. Most found Olivia's sand castle building skills the funniest.

For our creative project we made Olivia paper dolls. The children cut out the Olivia shaped dolls and then "dressed them up" with red tissue paper and red markers. Ball gowns were a popular option, as well as bathing suits, and even lederhosen.

And of course, we listened to Maria Callas during the project.

Never have I heard a song sung so loud. Because most children in Germany are familiar with Old MacDonald, this is a super easy song to learn in English, and a great tool for building animal vocabulary. We always sing it a few times and the last time around I simply point to the animals in the book First 100 Words and the children gleefully belt out the song! And, did you know that Old MacDonald also has tigers, penguins and elephants on his farm?

After singing lots of our favorite songs in English, we created cow masks!

The animal oriented hour ended with a fun parachute exercise, monkeys jumping on the bed, and lots of mooing!

Hand Print Rainbow Banners

Crafting our hand print rainbow banners was great fun!

Once our handprints were dry, we were ready to cut them out.

Parents helped by drawing a line around each handprint.

Here's volunteer Leonie asking the kids, "Which color ribbon do you want?" The kids had to answer, "I want red, please." Or yellow or blue!

Chameleons & Rainbows

We started off the August-October round of the Children's Art Workshop with color!

After singing our favorite songs, like the Energy Song and the Friendship Song, we read Leo Lionni's "A Color of His Own", the story of a chameleon looking for his true self. On his journey of self discovery the chameleon changes color a lot - and the kids helped by shouting out which color the chameleon had changed on each page. Then we went to the creative table to create art that would help us remember the colors of the rainbow in English.

This was a two part project. The first week was messy fun mixing the colors of the rainbow and making hand prints of each. Of course, we had fun remembering that "red and yellow make orange" and that "blue and red make purple". For musical accompaniment we enjoyed Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano.

Children's Art Workshop Numer One Helper Leonie likes to make Magic Bubbles for the kids!

We carefully put our beautiful hand prints on the drying rack to dry and then enjoyed Magic Bubbles to a new wonderful bubble song - Pure Imagination by Lori Carsillo is the most beautiful interpretation of the classic by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newly! (If you are interested in some beautiful sleepy-time music for children, please support Lori's amazing work and purchase her wonderful Lullabies for Little Dreamers.)

We finished up with a new song, Tall & Small, Count and Move, and our new goodbye song about cars and trains and boats and planes. Our stamp of the day was a train:

"It's blue!"

"Is it a red train?"

"No, it isn't. It's a blue train!"

Summer English - Week 4

This week, Rebecca joined us for The Children's English Hour! To celebrate the last week of our summer series, we explored caterpillars, butterflies and lots of food...

...beginning with Eric Carle's The Hungry Caterpillar! Rebecca even created a wonderful song for the event describing how a caterpillar creates a cocoon and then emerges as a beautiful butterfly. We also sang the Friendship Song, The energy Song, and Bubble Pop - one of our all-time favorites about how various sea creatures move about in the water.

Then it was time for some creativity, to help strengthen our vocabulary. This weeks project was to make brightly colored butterflies!

We finished up with our summertime parachute song about Summertime bugs - a ladybug, a butterfly, a caterpillar, a bee, a dragonfly, and several flowers - that dance and fly on the parachute, and our stamp dialogue, which was about a green sun!

This week's creative project was accompanied by Yo Yo Ma playing Bach's Cello Suites - perfect butterfly music!

Summer English Week 3 - Brown Bears and Goldfish

Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See is one of my favorite books to read with children. It's all about animals and colors, and a few strangely colored animals! Have you ever seen a blue horse? Or a purple cat? No? It's easy - just use your imagination!

We sang Bubble Pop! which is an interactive song all about sea creatures, as well as the Energy Song and Open, Shut Them.

I know everyone has seen a goldfish, so we made some out of bright orange red and yellow handprints!

As always, the children were encouraged to write their names on their artwork, or at least their first initial!

The results were wonderful!

We finished up with our counting march with rhythmic instruments and a goldfish stamp:

"What is it?"
"It's a goldfish."
"What color is it?"
"It's orange. It's an orange goldfish."

"May I have another one please?"
"Yes, you may!"

This week's vocabulary: bear, goldfish, cat, horse, wolf, sheep, children, teacher, jellyfish, octopus, fish, whale, crab, dolphin, blue, yellow, red, green, purple, orange, march, loud, quiet, numbers one to twenty, tambourine, wash board, cymbals, block, bells, float, roll, swim, snap, jump and wiggle!

Loud & Quiet

Opposites are a great way to build vocabulary. The song "Open, Shut Them" has been a longtime favorite at the Children's Art Workshop, presenting all kinds of opposites to sing about. Today we focused specifically on volume: loud and quiet. We warmed up with The Friendship Song, The Energy Song, Put Your Bells On Your Toes and Open, Shut Them. Then we read Leslie Patricelli's charming "QuietLOUD" that explores situations and activities that are either quiet or LOUD.

Then, I asked the children if painting was a quiet or a LOUD activity. "Quiet," of course. "But I think loud painting sounds like fun! I want to paint LOUDLY. Do you want to paint LOUDLY too?" "YES!"

But how can painting be LOUD? With marbles of course! Marble painting is a fun way of creating bright abstract pictures and to observe primary colors mixing to make secondary colors. It is also great for eye-hand coordination.

Then we enjoyed Magic Bubbles, the Balloon Game, our goodbye song, and an airplane stamp, because airplanes are LOUD! "What is it?" "It's an AIRPLANE!"

Blue Strawberries

The summer round of the Children's English Hour started off with an exploration into unusual fruit. But first we sang some of our favorite songs, including the Energy song to get us warmed up and Bells on Your Toes. Then we read Richard Scarry's 1963 charmer I am a Bunny.

Everyone knows strawberries are red. And sometimes a little bit green or yellow, but just a little bit, and not all the time. But are strawberries blue? "No!" insisted the kids. Perplexed, I told them I had seen a blue strawberry, and a purple one, and an orange one, for that matter. "No! Strawberries are red!" echoed around the room. So I needed to show the kids a blue strawberry so that they would believe me.

First, the children were presented with bowls of a brightly colored granular material. "What is it?" I asked. The kids shrugged. "Taste it!" I suggested. Timid fingers dipped into the colorful stiff, then cautiously touched the tips of tongues. Eyebrows raised and smiles spread. "What is it? Is is sugar?" "Yes!" Then I uncovered a bowl of perfectly normal red strawberries (with a little bit of yellow and a little bit of green on them, of course). I took a nice big juicy one and dipped it into the blue sugar. Violá: a blue strawberry! Each child was encouraged to try all the different colors to see if the strawberries tasted the same when they changed colors. Yummy, juicy fun!

Then we practiced counting to twenty loudly and quietly, marching in a circle and rapping and clanging little instruments. We finished up with magic bubbles, our goodbye song and an orange bunny stamp.

The Creative Summer English Workshop 2008

The Creative Summer English Workshop was a hit! Creative English-language maven Rebecca Schulz led an imaginative group of children through an English odyssey. Using logic, humor, and imagination, the kids decided to write and create a theater piece - and they did it all in English. The result was a humorous production involving a witch, a king, a ghost, a fairy and a nymph, and a happy ending, of course!

Der Children’s Summer English Workshop bietet Kindern im Alter von 9 bis 12 Jahren die Möglichkeit, viele spannende Erfahrungen zu machen und gleichzeitig spielend Englisch zu lernen. Einzeln und im Team werden die Teilnehmer zu einem selbstgewählten Thema mit verschiedenen Materialien und Methoden ein Ergebnis erarbeiten, dass auch beim letzten Treffen Freunden und Familie präsentiert wird. Es wird nicht nur gebastelt, sondern vielfältig auch mit Musik, Logik, Humor und Sprache experimentiert.

Keine Englischkenntnisse notwendig, die Kinder lernen die notwendigen Wörter und Redewendungen im Workshop. Die Kinder bekommen einige Englisch-Übungen und eine kreative Aufgabe mit nach Hause. Es muss nichts mitgebracht werden.

Weeks 7 & 8: Building Cork Floaters

We learned so much in the eight week spring Children's English Hour. Through reading exciting and excellent children's books like Andy Warhol's Colors by Susan Goldmann Rubin, Where's the Fish? by Taro Gomi, and Squishy Turtle from Priddy Books we listened to the sounds of the English language, learned lots of new words and phrases and enjoyed funny, creative stories. Our springtime song list included: Open Shut Them, The Energy Song, The Friendship Song, The World is a Rainbow, The Turtle Song, Bubble Pop!, and the World in Our Hands. Lots of hands-on creative projects with classical, jazz and traditional musical accompaniment and games helped us to remember what we've learned.

Our last project for the spring round of the Children's English Hour required two lessons. The first lesson involved cutting out shapes of sea creatures - otters, whales, turtles and crabs - and painting them using one of my favorite techniques: cork dabbing. Corks are handy little utensils for small hands and dabbing colors together bring bright and beautiful results. The kids were excited to see what we were going to do with the painted shapes next time!

For the second part of the project on week 8 I set up the creative table with name-tags and the kids had to find their name and sit at that place, where they found their painted animal shapes, scissors, a cork, a stick that was split on one end and a coin. They were instructed to fold their shapes in two and set them in a lamination pouch. Once laminated (careful - Hot!) the children had to cut out their animals, leaving about half a centimeter edge.

Then we slid the forms into a slit ing the cork, stuck the stick into the opposite side of the cork and carefully inserted the coin into the split end of the stick. The result looked like this,

but the kids still had no idea what it was they were making until I brought out a tub of water!

Cork Floaters! I was thrilled when some of the children began to sing Bubble Pop! which is about fish swimming in the water, whales rolling in the water, and jellyfish floating in the water, and The Turtle Song about a Turtle who swims in the bathtub.

Everyone wanted to have a bath that evening!

Musical accompaniment for both weeks was the beautiful and lively Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano by Claude Bolling.

Goofing Around

Many children arrive early for their Children's English Hour lessons so that they can play with language-oriented toys, read English children's book, or just goof around. Goofing around is a great way to learn English too. On this day, the kids used the colorful little stools around our letter mat as headdresses, crowns and protection. We learned the words "king" and "queen", "robot", "knight", and of course "goofy".

On a Roll - The Children's English Hour Week Six

Several weeks ago, one of our CAW Dads donated a bag of empty, clean roll-on deodorant bottles. So I made some big ball-point paint pens with them. This was a fun project that inspired me to read Art by Patrick McDonnell again - a big favorite of kids and parents! (I am especially taken with the author's support of organizations that dedicate their work to animal and environmental causes. If you're interested in purchasing a Patrick McDonnell book, visit his website store. Items sold exclusively on the site are made with organic materials and a tree is planted for every print sold.) "Art" introduced new English words for the kids including: zig-zag, scribble, squiggle, dot, splotch, blotch, doodle, and curlycue.

The Children's English Hour - Week Five

It was Earth Day on Tuesday, so this week focused on nature. I created a special new song, based on the wonderful "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands". I needed props for the song so I made a "world" out of felt and filled it with pictures of endangered species and environments - the kids learned about "animals and places that need our help". We passed the "world" around in a circle and as each child pulled out a picture we sang, for example, "He's got the coral reefs in his hands" or "she's got the whales and the dolphins in her hands".

Because the weather has finally decided to be warm, breezy and sunny, and because of earth day, I decided it would be fun to make a toy to honor wind power. We made pinwheels!

Magic Bubbles

Taro Gomi, Hong Ting and Koi

My project for week for was inspired by the fun book "Where's the Fish" by Taro Gomi - you might be familiar with Taro Gomi's well-known "Everyone Poops" - and the traditional chinese Zheng music of Hong Ting.

After singing our favorite English songs "Bubble, Pop"" and "Open Shut Them", we read "Where's the Fish?" which was great fun. Taro Gomi's little red fish is quite adventurous and finds himself hidden among all kinds of stuff. The kids loved searching for the little fish and shouted "There's fishy!" with me when they found him.

Then we rolled up our sleeves, donned smocks and got Zen with bubble wrap.

The result: beautiful Koi with colorful scales!

Week three of The Children's English Hour was all about color... especially Andy Warhol's colors. In Andy Warhol's world, anything goes - even blue horses and pink cows in a row!

Warhol did any thing he pleased with color and so did we with surprise bags!

What do caterpillars and toes have in common? Our lesson this week! After fun with our favorite songs, we read Eric Carle's masterpiece "The Hungry Caterpillar". There are so many wonderful creative projects to do that support learning language concepts introduced in this book: numbers, fruit, food, pupation...

This time, though, we focused on toes! Toe-print caterpillars that is!

Squishy Turtle

Last week we started off the Children's English Hour spring classes with a look at some sea creatures. The fabric book Squishy Turtle and Friends from Priddy Books is a cheerful, amusing introduction to our friends in the sea from crabs who know how to pinch tiny toes to oysters with a precious gift hiding deep inside. I was also excited to sing "Bubble Bubble Pop!", a song about how aquatic animals move in the water and a true crowd pleaser!
Then we made hand print blue crabs. Most kids don't believe me when I tell them that crabs are blue, so I have to show them a picture.

This is also a wonderful way to get the kids to learn their color words: "Crabs are green!" "No!" "What color are they?" "Crabs are orange!" Occasionally we'll see differently colored crabs as well, as the kids open themselves up to their creative energy. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this project is painting color onto our hands!

Today's musical accompaniment was the ever-enjoyable Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano by Claude Bolling.

Felt Flower Napkin Rings

This week we enjoyed the Metropolitan Museum of Art's lovely book "Vincent's Colors". The kids loved this book, shouting out the colors as they heard them! Vincent van Gogh is always a hit with kids, whether experiencing his words and paintings in a book or painting sunflowers themselves.

After practicing English with songs and reading, we gathered at the creative table to make felt flower napkin rings (... or hair ornaments, or rings, or pacifiers). Cutting felt is an interesting task for little fingers, and creating such colorful objects with just a few snips is just plain fun.

I like to read Leo Lionni's books to my groups. Because the author's charming children's books are well known world wide, most of the kids that come to English class at The Children's Art Workshop are already familiar with the stories. They really get a kick out of hearing books like Frederick and Swimmy read to them in English. I like the books for both their content - the stories encourage individuality, imagination and cooperation - and the creative projects they inspire me to create! Tune in for some exploration into English and fun activities with Leo Lionni and friends.

We worked hard this week, adding two new Super Simple Songs to our repertoire: "Open, Shut Them", which helps us learn some opposites, and "I See Something Blue", a fun run-around song that helps us learn our colors, from our friend Devon in Tokyo. These two songs are easy to learn and fun to sing - and help expand our vocabulary. Thanks Devon!

Because we worked so hard we were rewarded with a super fun new project - swirly planets!

Revel in Color

Sometimes it's nice to forgo heavily theme-oriented activities and get back to basics. The elements of art themselves are a source of wonder and delight. After our warm up songs and games, the kids drew balls in primary and secondary colors from a small bag. They then had to search for the matching surprise bag on the table and create a collage of color.

Meet Leonie

Here's Leonie, my fabulous assistant. After joining her mother and foster brother Shawn for the Tuesday afternoon Children's English Hour a few times, Leonie asked me if I needed a helper. After chatting with her for a few minutes I learned that she wants to attend a bilingual high school and needs to brush up her English. My suggestion: Leonie helps me with my courses on Thursdays and is only allowed to speak English with me and the families. A great exchange!

This week we enjoyed the lively book Move! by Robin Page and Steve Jenkins. The kids were especially interested in the words "spider" and "snake", but were more than happy to build their own polar bears out of torn exotic paper.

The Young Masters Studio - Miró

A recent trip to Barcelona inspired me to rediscover Joan Miró with my Young Masters Studio class. After pondering Miró's spacey symbolism and cosmic composition, we delved into the Catalan master's dreamworld ourselves. In part one of a double-lesson, we spent time exploring color theory, deconstructing symbols, drawing these symbols with our eyes closed, balancing elements in a composition, and trying to understand Mirós mind by painting our own Miró masterpieces. Musical accompaniment: the surrealist musings of Mirò contemporary Eric Satie. What I enjoyed the most? Observing the children's uninhibited acceptance of Miró and their delight in recreating his paintings themselves. And don't forget - we do this all in English! Next time, we'll create our own compositions, based on elements our own recurring dreams and subconscious.

2007 A Look Back - Peace with Picasso

One of my favorite lessons is learning about peace with Picasso. Picasso's line drawings evoke endless vocabulary for the concepts of war and peace. After brainstorming symbols of peace, we studied Picasso's whimsical representations and had a go at it ourselves. The results were breathtaking!

Hoopsters

Last week we took a detour from our usual visual arts curriculum and transformed ourselves into aeronautical engineers. After reading the beautiful book "Moon Plane" by Peter McCarty we sat down and crafted Hoopsters. Unfortunately, we had so much fun flying our colorful Hoopsters that I forgot to take pictures.

The first week of the Children's Art Workshop didn't start off with a bang so much as a rattle & roll. New faces and veterans alike enjoyed jumping right in with favorite's like Nancy Stewart's "Energy Song" and the "Colorful Mittens" song, Eric Carle's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?", and marble painting!

It's been a strong start in 2008 - our second official year providing creative English courses for children in Hannover, Germany. I'm pleased to announce that our business has tripled going into 2008, and so has the degree of my creative chaos. When not taking calls, I've been up to my elbows in finger-paint, children's books and construction paper coming up with a dynamic program for this round of winter classes!

For our classes starting on Thursday, we'll be welcoming some new faces along with many CAW veterans. If you would like to join a course, reserve your place as soon as possible. There is usually a long waiting list weeks before courses start. I'm trying to keep up with the demand though - after Easter we are expecting to offer many more courses throughout the week.

The Children's Art Workshop has a new volunteer. Leonie will be assisting me with classes on Thursdays. Thanks Leonie!
